The peakDetect is designed as a simple, robust and cost effective tool for monitoring the pulse quality of femtosecond and picosecond lasers in the near infrared spectral region.
This is important for peak power sensitive applications that can be found e.g. in integrated systems for non-linear microscopy, micro-machining, medical diagnostics or surgery.
The peakDetect provides a single figure of merit (FOM) for the quality of ultrashort laser pulses or equivalent pulse duration information based on measured peak power. This information is derived by a peak power sensitive measurement inside the peakDetect which responds to deviations from the ideal pulse form, repetition rate and average power. This could be all temporal (e.g. chirp and satellite pulses) or spectral (e.g. ASE) distortions as well as the spatial pulse shape (e.g. pulse front tilt).
The peakDetect delivers several measured laser parameters such as average power, repetition rate, and beam position on the internal position sensitive detector as well as the average pulse energy derived from these measured parameters. The peakDetect can be calibrated for a specific type of laser system. Hence all peakDetect will show the same FOM value for identical pulse quality for all lasers of this type. Details of measuring large diameter beams can be discussed on an individual basis as required.
All in all, the peakDetect gives an effective peak power dependent FOM which takes into account non-ideal pulse properties on a much wider temporal as well as intensity scale. It is a convenient tool for repetitive and continuous checks of the laser pulse performance and the software provides data logging capabilities for long term monitoring or testing. Its small form factor and ease of use make the peakDetect a great little companion for day-to-day laser verification.
The peakDetect is different from a typical APE autocorrelator which measures the width of a pulse over certain (small) time windows around the actual pulse width itself. Also, the typical autocorrelator is not laid out for the dynamic range to measure low level yet long range (and thus significantly energetic) pulse undergrounds. The peakDetect however, is optimized for this scenario.
